Internal load management

Internal load management

The AC SMART VALUE and ADVANCED versions have an integrated load/charge management to avoid load peaks, power outages and unbalanced loads when several electric vehicles are charging at the same time. Up to 16 AC SMART wallboxes can be controlled with the integrated load/charge management of the AC SMART. One AC SMART in the system acts as a control box, which passes on the available charging current to the individual satellite boxes.

A distinction can be made between static and dynamic load/charging management. With static load management, the maximum charging current for the charging points is defined, which is then divided up between the individual charging points when several electric vehicles are charged. With dynamic load management, on the other hand, the available charging current is continuously recalculated and then distributed to the charging points accordingly. Below you will find step-by-step instructions on how to set up an internal load/charge management in the AC SMART web server.

Please note that the steps described here may only be carried out by trained electricians.

Basic requirements

Static load management is integrated in the AC SMART VALUE variant. No additional components are required for this.

In addition to static load management, the AC SMART ADVANCED variant also includes dynamic load management, which requires an additional energy meter to be installed in order to calculate the available charging current (you can find a corresponding energy meter in the Weidmüller online catalog). To use dynamic load management, at least one AC SMART ADVANCED must be installed in the system to act as a control box. AC SMART VALUE wallboxes can also be used for the satellite boxes.

Please refer to the following schematic diagrams to find out how to connect the charging stations for the respective load management::

Instructions for setting up an internal load/charge management in the web server.

1. Open the web server of your AC SMART (see chapter 9.3 of the operating instructions). The Modbus TCP interface must be configured as WIFI or Ethernet (see chapter 9.4. of the operating instructions).

2. In the menu item Load Managementunder General you will find all the settings you need to make to set up a load/charging management. There must be a control box in each charging network. Each additional EV charging box that is part of the same charging network must be configured as a satellite box. Activate Satellite box or Control box accordingly.

3. For the control box only: Enter the desired value for the Global current limit [A] and the IP addresses of all connected satellite boxes. The Connected field shows whether communication between the satellite box and control box is possible.

4. If you want to use the dynamic load management function, activate the Dynamic function. Confirm your entries with Save.
